Each month, we tell you what economists know about shopping, which at first may not sound like much  – thankfully pocket protectors are so versitle.  But they do know that to get the most for your money, you gotta not only know where to shop but also when to shop. And these people do all sorts of number-crunching that proves right now prices too high to buy:

Cot for baby boyInfant furniture including cribs, playpens, dressers, high chairs and dressing tables: As if having a kid wasn’t expensive enough, prices for baby stuff soars in March. These things are much less expensive in September – and even August if you can hold out that long. Prices don’t subside until June.

Men’s pants and shorts: From now until May, men’s bottoms sell for top prices. Stores offer their best deals for pants and shorts December, when they’re some 10 percent cheaper. Right now, men’s shirts and sweaters are priced within reason, so for birthday present purchases, shop in that direction.)

Women’s dresses: if you didn’t stock up last month when we warned you  (we did, you know….) about low prices wouldn’t last, well, you missed the boatnecks, the A-lines and the pencil skirts because prices now are supersized. Dresses will never be this expensive again. Well, until March of next year.

Propane, kerosene and firewood: Sure, you need these things most now – which is exactly why they’re pricey. But they’re also things you can store, so the idea is to stock up on this stuff in August — when they’re much cheaper. We know, we know, it’s hard to remember in between trips to the beach.
