Bean Bag 2 Two children have died in a popularly-sold bean bag chair, The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Reported today. The children had opened the chair’s zippers and crawled inside, where they either suffocated or got trapped and inhaled the foam beaded stuffing. Safety standards – which are voluntary – require such chairs to have closed and permanently disabled zippers.

A 13-year old boy from McKinney, Texas died and a 3-year-old girl from Lexington, Ky. died after suffocating from lack of air, the CPSC said. Both children were found inside the chairs.

About 2.2 million of the chairs – which can be unzipped and opened — are being recalled. They are a variety of shapes (round and L-shaped,) colors (blue, red, pink, yellow, Kelly green, black, port, navy, lime, royal blue, turquoise, tangerine, purple, violet and multi-color,) and finishes (vinyl and fabric.)

The recalled bean bag chairs were sold at Bon-Ton, Meijer, Pamida, School Specialty, Wayfair and Walmart stores and online at Amazon.com, Meijer.com and Walmart.com before July 2013 for between $30 and $100.
