These are among the deadly diet pills that can pierce holes in your stomach.

These are among the deadly diet pills that can pierce holes in your stomach.

Let’s talk about all the infuriating aspects surrounding latest round of diet pill recalls.

In case you have been so busy with your New Year’s resolution dieting —  or money-saving or private-fuming because it’s so hard being nice to people — to notice, two major diet pills were recalled by the FDA after the agency actually tested them. (Imagine that.)

SmartLipo365 and Lipo Escultura were each found to contain ingredients that have been known to increase our risk for heart attack, cause serious gastrointestinal bleeding and – get this – deadly piercing of the stomach and intestines. Smart Lipo might very well cause cancer with long term use.

Perhaps not so smart.

Not only did both pills contain sibutramine but both manufacturers conveniently left that ingredient off the product label and – oops – neglected to mention it to the FDA. Probably because it’s an appetite suppressant that was withdrawn from the US market in October 2010. SmartLipo365 also contained Phenolphthalein, which is so cancer-causing it’s not even approved for marketing in the United States. And Lipo Escultura was made with Diclofenac, which causes all sorts of gastrointestinal damage including bleeding and that deadly internal piercing mentioned above.

So in addition to being angry at these makers for trying to make a buck with complete indifference to our lives – both with their choice of ingredients and an intentional decision to conceal them — they also had the nerve to insult our intelligence. In an apparent attempt to make us believe their profits might actually be good for us – like a vitamin, perhaps? – the name of the company selling Lipo Escultra is called “JAT Natural Products Corp.” Despite the only natural – in the expected sense – thing here is the illness that was reported to the government.
