The rate of volunteering around here is dropping.

The rate of volunteering around here is dropping.

Does it feel like there are less people offering to sell tickets to the school’s annual dinner dance? Or read to kids in the classroom? Your perception is likely a reality, seeing as the volunteer rate in America dropped in 2012, according to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Here’s what else we know:

Women are more likely to volunteer than men.

College educated people are more likely to volunteer than high school graduates. Both are more likely to volunteer than those who didn’t graduate high school.

Most volunteers work part-time – they’re employed – and donate more time than those who work full-time, are stay-home moms, students, and those who spend their days looking for work, according to the government report.

When it comes to ages, those of us between 35-years-old and 44-years-old most likely to volunteer.

Married people are more likely to volunteer than those who are single or divorced.

People with children under age 18 are more likely to volunteer than people with no children at all.

The bulk of all volunteering by both men and women is done in churches, synagogues and temples. After that, we dontate time to our schools and to kids’ after-school activities.

Women overwhelmingly volunteered by either teaching or fundraising, while men are coaching.
